In 1913 plans were initiated to organize Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. In May 1913 Rev.
H. B. Joyner,
Rev. Peter Barnes, and Rev. B.F. Talton, after having left their mother church, First African Baptist, met
to organize what is now known as Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Antioch has flourished since it's beginning. The first pastor was Rev. L.
H. Powell. Services were held in
the Odd Fellows Hall on South George Street. During his tenure, the Church site (corner of Virginia and
Pine Streets) was purchased for the sum of $1,150.00.
The second pastor was Rev. J.C. Melton, during his
pastorate the structure on the corner of West Pine and Virginia Streets was built. Rev. J.D. McRae, succeeded
Rev. Melton as Pastor. Several other pastors served Antioch, were: Rev. B.F. Johnson, Rev.
C. C. Staton,
Rev. C.D. Lipscomb, Rev. R. C. Stover, Rev. Louis Wright, Interim pastor Rev.
Hassell Joyner and Rev. H. V. Brown, Rev. B. L. Rich, Interim pastor Rev. J.
E. Arnette, Rev. Robert Davis, Rev. James Ward,
Rev. William Butts.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on June 21, 1981, at 1:00 p.m., Rev.
O'Clee Lewis, lead the march to the new site at the corner of Elm
street and H. V. Brown Lane. In March 1983, the Church was ready for
occupancy. Although the weather was inclement, Sunday,
March 27, 1983 the minister and members gathered at the old site and
prepared for the march to the new church. At last members of Antioch
were realizing a dream that had become a reality. Rev. James
Williams, succeeded Rev. O'Clee Lewis and under his pastorate renovations were completed. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth J. Tate was called to be
the pastor in May 2002. We have been moving forward ever since, growing both numerically and spiritually.
